Overview

Are you a mental health professional looking for space to breathe, reconnect, and deepen your practice? This is a retreat designed with you in mind.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Cascais — a beautifully preserved coastal town just 30 minutes from Lisbon — the Self-Compassion Retreat offers four days of immersive CFT self-practice, morning movement by the sea, nourishing meals, and the kind of connection that only happens when a small group of thoughtful professionals slow down together.

Led by internationally recognised CFT expert Dr. Chris Irons, this retreat is designed specifically for professionals in caring roles — psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, nurses, teachers, and other helping professionals. Whether you’re looking to deepen your clinical knowledge, restore your own wellbeing, or simply step away from the pace of everyday life, this retreat provides the ideal environment.

Previous experience with Compassion Focused Therapy is helpful, but it is not required.

What to Expect

This retreat weaves together embodied CFT practice, deep personal reflection, and genuine rest — offering a space where both your professional and personal self can be nourished.

Grounded in the principles of Compassion Focused Therapy, the experience is designed to help you connect more fully with your compassionate mind — and to experience, rather than simply understand, what that means.

You’ll return with:

  • Embodied insight into CFT — not just an intellectual understanding, but the experience of it from the inside out
  • A renewed relationship with your compassionate self, developed within a safe, emotionally resonant environment
  • Practical tools and practices you can draw on long after the retreat ends — for your clients, and for yourself
  • A restored sense of perspective and energy, ready to re-engage with your work and your life
  • New professional connections — the kind of relationships that form when a small group of open-hearted people share something meaningful together

And perhaps most importantly — a felt sense of having been genuinely cared for.

Location & Accommodation

The retreat takes place at Hotel Baía, situated in the heart of Cascais — one of Portugal’s most beloved coastal destinations. Cascais combines the charm of a historic fishing village with the warmth of the Portuguese Riviera. The Atlantic coastline, cobbled streets, excellent food, and relaxed pace make it one of Europe’s most restorative settings.

Hotel Baía sits directly on Cascais Bay, with sea views, a central location, and easy access to the waterfront, local restaurants, and the scenic coastline.

Cascais is around 40 minutes by train from central Lisbon, making it straightforward to reach from most European airports.

Rooms are allocated on a first confirmed booking basis.

If you would like to arrive a day early or extend your stay after the retreat, we’re happy to help arrange additional nights at the hotel.

He was involved in some of the early publications on CFT (Gilbert & Irons, 2004, 2005), and has since contributed extensively to the literature on compassion, shame, self-criticism, and attachment, co-authoring numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed articles.

An engaging and sought-after teacher, Chris has delivered workshops, lectures, and retreats in more than 20 countries, reaching over 25,000 professionals and members of the general public.

Chris is also the author of five books, including:

  • The Compassionate Mind Approach to Difficult Emotions

In 2024, Chris and Dr Elaine Beaumont launched The Self-Compassion App—the first CFT-inspired mobile app, designed to support users in developing self-compassion through evidence-based practices, guided reflections, and psychoeducation.

Don’t Take Our Word For It – Hear What Others Are Saying About Our Retreats…

“This week will live in my soul for a long time. It was a powerful experience filled with learning, warmth, and connection. I’m so grateful to have been part of it.”

Dr. Kesta Purt, UK

“Thanks so much – it was a privilege to be part of such a special experience. The retreat created a rare space for reflection, learning, and genuine connection with others who share the same values.”

Dr. Matthew Wesson, UK

“If you are considering attending I would say just do it! A life changing experience that I will keep and build on forever. I knew it would be good but wow I could never have imagined how good. Perfect from start to finish.”

Diane Maddison, UK

“The location was stunning, the staff were incredible, and the whole retreat felt beautifully organised from start to finish. It was such a nourishing experience both personally and professionally.”

Dr. Sara Devaney, USA

“This is an excellent workshop and retreat. I would highly recommend it to any therapist who needs to take time out for reflection and healing from both work and personal challenges. It really does help to generate a refreshing and safe space to recalibrate and prioritise your practice and personal life.”

Dr. Gerard Butcher, Ireland

“Events that enable growth amongst therapists rather than simple training are rare, and as rare opportunities go to work with and bond with colleagues and ultimately new friends, this was exceptional.”

Dr. Michael Appleton, UK

“An amazing opportunity to spend time with other therapists from different countries, cultures and professional backgrounds, and felt part of something very special. Really valued all being in one place in the evening, it provided space for us to be together as a group.”

Emma Blaney, Ireland

Tags:
Do I need previous experience of Compassion Focused Therapy?
No. Previous experience of CFT is helpful, but it isn’t essential. The retreat is suitable for therapists and other helping professionals who are interested in developing their own compassionate practice, whether you are already familiar with CFT or relatively new to it.
Where is the retreat being held?
The retreat will take place at Hotel Baía in Cascais, Portugal, from 20 to 23 May 2027. The hotel is right on the seafront in the centre of Cascais, with cafés, restaurants, beaches and the marina all within easy walking distance.
How do I get to Cascais?
The closest airport is Lisbon Airport. From Lisbon, Cascais is easily reached by taxi, private transfer or train. The train journey from central Lisbon takes around 40 minutes and Cascais station is just a short walk from Hotel Baía. We will send everyone detailed travel information closer to the retreat.
What time should I arrive on Thursday?
You are welcome to arrive in Cascais from late morning on Thursday 20 May. Hotel check-in is normally from 3pm, but guests arriving earlier will be able to leave their luggage at the hotel and enjoy Cascais before rooms are available. We will confirm the exact retreat start time in your final joining information.
What is included in the retreat price?
Your retreat package includes: three nights' accommodation at Hotel Baía five CFT self-practice sessions with Dr Chris Irons morning movement sessions two group lunches three group dinners retreat materials the full hosted retreat programme Full details of the programme will be sent to participants before travel.
What is not included?
Flights and travel to and from Portugal are not included. Any personal spending, additional meals or drinks outside the retreat programme, optional activities and travel insurance are also your own responsibility.
Can I come on my own?
Absolutely. Many people come to our retreats on their own, and you definitely won’t be the only one. One of the loveliest parts of these retreats is the group that forms around them. We create plenty of opportunities to eat together, chat and get to know one another without making anything feel forced.
Can I share a room?
Yes. We offer both private-room and shared-room options. If you are booking with a friend or colleague and would like to share together, just let us know the name of the person you would like to room with. If you are interested in sharing but don’t already have a roommate, please contact us before booking and we can talk through the options.
Can I bring my partner or a companion who isn't attending the CFT sessions?
Yes. We will have a companion option for partners or friends who would like to travel with you and share your room but will not be taking part in Chris's CFT sessions. Companions will be able to join some of the social elements and group meals. If you are thinking of bringing someone with you, just let us know and we will send you the companion details separately.
How much is the deposit?
A £300 deposit secures your retreat place. The remaining balance can then be paid in instalments before the retreat. Full payment dates and booking terms will be provided when you book.
Is my place confirmed as soon as I pay the deposit?
Yes. Once your booking and £300 deposit have been received, your place will be reserved. We are working with a limited number of rooms, so we recommend booking early if you have a particular room preference.
What happens if the retreat does not reach the minimum number of participants?
Like all of our international retreats, Portugal is subject to reaching a minimum number of bookings. If for any reason we were unable to proceed with the retreat, we would let participants know as early as possible and any payments made to us would be refunded in line with our booking terms. For this reason, we always recommend waiting until the retreat has been confirmed before booking non-refundable travel.
Should I book my flights straight away?
You are very welcome to look at flights, but we recommend choosing flexible or refundable travel where possible. We will let everyone know as soon as the retreat has reached the minimum number required to proceed.
Can my employer pay for my place?
Yes. If your employer, organisation or practice is funding your place and you need an invoice or additional information for approval purposes, just contact us at info@eventwiseni.com and we will be happy to hel
What should I do if I have dietary or accessibility requirements?
Please let us know when you book. We will work with the hotel and our suppliers to accommodate dietary requirements and accessibility needs wherever reasonably possible. If you would like to discuss anything before booking, please feel free to contact us.
Do you issue CPD hours?
Yes. Although the experience is designed to feel like a retreat, the CFT sessions with Dr Chris Irons are structured self-practice training and can be used as part of your continuing professional development. You will receive a CPD certificate confirming the number of training hours completed during the retreat. The emphasis is on experiential learning and developing your own compassionate practice, rather than formal classroom-style teaching.
