Abstract

Psychotherapy is complex, and trauma-focused work can feel even more so. It is not uncommon for therapists to lose confidence over time, particularly when sessions do not progress as expected. This can lead to uncertainty, drifting, or avoidance of key parts of the work.

Following intensive EMDR foundation training, many clinicians find that important aspects of the model become less accessible in practice. This workshop is designed to refresh and revitalise your understanding of EMDR in a practical and clinically grounded way.

Across the two days, the workshop will revisit EMDR therapy’s eight-phase protocol, explore core unblocking strategies, and introduce approaches across all phases that practitioners may not have previously considered.

There will be a strong focus on:

  • Cognitive interweaves and how to use them effectively
  • Understanding and resolving blocks in processing
  • Reviewing treatment planning and preparation
  • Exploring why clients may not be progressing as expected

The workshop is highly interactive, with discussion and questions encouraged throughout. The aim is to make the learning directly applicable to real clinical work.

Delivered in Matthew’s clear, engaging and supportive style, the training offers a rare opportunity to develop skills in an in-person setting, allowing for richer discussion and deeper learning than is typically possible online.

Learning Objectives

In this workshop participants will:

  • Refresh their understanding of the eight-phase EMDR protocol
  • Develop confidence in identifying and working with blocks in processing
  • Learn practical unblocking strategies and cognitive interweaves
  • Strengthen treatment planning and case formulation skills
  • Reflect on clinical challenges in a supportive learning environment
  • Apply EMDR techniques more confidently in real-world practice
